Shri Mata Vaishno
Devi : The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board came into being in
1986 by an Ordinar issued by the Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, which
was ratified by the State Legislature in 1988. The Shrine Board took
up a massive development programme to improve the services and facilities
available to the yatris. As a result of the Shrine Board's efforts:
- The entire 13
km route has been relaid, widened and tiled, besides this it is lit
every night by 650 powerful sodium vapor lamps. 3,000 meter's of railings
have also been installed.
- Public utilites
with a capacity of 650 seats with automatic flushing system as well
as separate bathing facilities for men and women have been provided.
These facilities are manned by 400 officials. For maintaining high
standards of cleanliness, vacuum cleaners, fogging machines and an
automatic dry cleaning plant for dispensing clean blankets to the
pilgrims have been provided.
- Five medical
units besides an evening clinic and PHC are now functional.
- Thirty five shelter
cum cafeteria units have been set up. The eating places provide hygienic
and wholesome vegetarian food. Rates at all places are prominently
displayed.
- Potable water
has been made available all along the route, with water coolers and
storage facilites.
- Construction
of additional accommodation is being undertaken in a big way.
- About 70 green
spots have been created with flower beds and shrubs as of a massive
afforestation drive.
- Entertainment
facilites provided to pilgrims waiting to visit the Shrine include
the screening of religious films.
- Besides this,
the Shrine Board has also undertaken humanitarian services like the
construction of eight school blocks and two work Centres with the
objective of providing jobs and skills to the women of the region.
The Board is also providing facilities and assistance to such persons
who are engaged in providing yatra support services to the pilgrims
like pithus, ponies etc. The Board has also instituted eight fellowships
to arouse interest in the Indian culture.
Getting There
Location :
Nestled in the folds of the mighty Trikuta mountain 61 kilometre north
of Jammu at a height of 5,200 feet from the sea level, the cave shrine
of Trikuta Bhagwati has been a beacon of faith and fulfilment for millons
of devotees since time immemorial.
Jammu to Katra
: Buses leave for Katra after every 10 minutes from the main bus
stand at Jammu between 5.30 a.m to 8.30 p.m. During rush periods additional
buses are also pressed into service. Taxis are also available to hire
between Jammu and Katra. These can be hired from the Jammu airport,
Jammu Railway Station and the Tourist Reception Centre. A number of
travel agencies run conducted tours to Katra regularly from Delhi and
other major cities in northern and central India.
Ranbireshwar
Temple : Located on Shalimar Road near the New Secretariat, and
built by Maharaja Ranjeet Singh in 1883 AD, Ranbireshwar Temple is dedicated
to Lord Shiva. It has one central 'Lingam' measuring seven and a half
feet in height (7.5 ft.).
In addition
there are 1,25,000 tiny Lingams, brought from Narmada River, embedded
in the platforms.
Raghunath Mandir
: Maharaja Gulab Singh began the construction of the 17 Temple Raghunath
Mandir complex in the crowded downtown "Bazaar" named after
it in 1851. It was left to his son, Ranbir Singh who inagurated it six
years later. Perhaps the most popular Temple No of Benaras, it contains
representation of almost the entire Pantheon, though the emphasis falls
on the various incarnations Lord Vishnu. The complex houses a rich collection
of ancient text manuscripts.
Peer Baba :
The Daragah of Peer Budhan ali Shah is another shrine that protects
Jumuites. On Thursday Hindu & Sikh Devotees vastly out number their
Muslim Berethren at the Shrine.
Shrine of Vaishno
Mata : The small town of Katra which serves as the base camp for
visitors has the famous Shrine of Vaishnoideviji in the Trikuta hills
which is 50 km from Jammu. The shrine is approachable on foot, along
12 kms. long well laid foot - path. Every year 4 million pilgrims pass
through Katra on the way to Vaishnodevi. Accommodation is available
in tourist Bungalows Yatrika and number of private Hotels, besides Pilgrims
"Sarais".
Shiv Khori :
This Holy Cave, nearly a kilometre long is 100 kms. from Jammu .
This has a 4 feet high naturally formed Shivaling, is considered second
only to Shrine to Vaishnoieviji. A major festival is held here on Shivratri
day.
Mansar Lake :
Mansar lake is 62 kms from Jammu. It is a beautiful lake fringed by
forest covered hills where boating facilites are available on the spot.
Every year around Baisakhi, a food & crafts festival is organised
here by J&K tourism.
Surnisar Lake
: This lake is 42 kms. from Jammu. It is a picturesque spot while
the lake surrounded with wooded forests.
